The lighting plan

Light 1 · key

None / neutral

Comfortable, soft main light; adapt the pose to the person.

Large softbox · -35° from the camera direction · 1.6 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Light 2 · rim

Your weak warm candidate

Warm the back edge of fabric and hair, with clear walking space.

Gridded stripbox · 140° from the camera direction · 1.6 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Make the test frames

  1. Choose a comfortable pose and keep stands outside movement paths.
  2. Set the neutral key for wanted skin texture.
  3. Add the warm rim in small increments; compare skin and fabric, which may reflect differently.

Keep camera WB fixed for comparisons. Begin with your neutral key reference, then adjust deliberately.

Meter with the actual gel fitted. Keep filtration loss separate from your chosen creative level. Unknown source output and camera settings remain unknown; no universal flash fraction is implied.

When the first frame differs

  • Warm fabric does not require the same photographed brightness as skin.
  • Keep gel spill away from the front of the face unless deliberate. Never chase a universal skin RGB number.
Troubleshoot my version

Adapt the kit

  • One light: keep the neutral key and choose a warm material or background.
  • Three lights: add a subtle background contribution only if separation needs it.

Evidence & publication record

Prepared by Learn Studio Lighting editorial · Published 2026-10-22 · Updated 2026-10-22.

No photographer is claimed to have tested this setup. No finished photograph, actual meter readings or original flash settings have been supplied. Replacing a diagram with an illustration does not establish testing evidence.

Sources, evidence & screen previews

These tools propose experiments. Screen colors are appearance targets, not recovered spectra, gel identities or guaranteed camera results. Numeric measurement inputs are supplied by you; publication and studio testing are separate checks.
