The lighting plan

Light 1 · key

None / neutral

Natural face with a controlled footprint.

Gridded softbox · -30° from the camera direction · 1.4 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Light 2 · background

Your blue candidate

Illuminate only the selected background area.

Reflector · 150° from the camera direction · 1.4 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Make the test frames

  1. Mark the subject position and frame the visible background.
  2. Test gel coverage at the center and edges. A farther source may even coverage but needs more output.
  3. Add the key and compare the same sample regions without auto adjustments.

Keep camera WB fixed for comparisons. Begin with your neutral key reference, then adjust deliberately.

Meter with the actual gel fitted. Keep filtration loss separate from your chosen creative level. Unknown source output and camera settings remain unknown; no universal flash fraction is implied.

When the first frame differs

  • A visible hot spot may be an intentional gradient. For uniformity, adjust aim, distance and coverage before adding power.
  • Black paper may demand more output and still reflect less color than gray.
Troubleshoot my version

Adapt the kit

  • One light: use a colored backdrop under a neutral key; you lose independent background illumination.
  • Three lights: add a second background light only if the area needs broader coverage.

Evidence & publication record

Editorial status: published. Evidence status: illustrative.

Prepared by Learn Studio Lighting editorial · Published 2026-10-22 · Updated 2026-10-22.

No photographer is claimed to have tested this setup. No finished photograph, actual meter readings or original flash settings have been supplied. Replacing a diagram with an illustration does not establish testing evidence.

Sources, evidence & screen previews

These tools propose experiments. Screen colors are appearance targets, not recovered spectra, gel identities or guaranteed camera results. Numeric measurement inputs are supplied by you; publication and studio testing are separate checks.
