The lighting plan

Light 1 · rim

Your red candidate

Red outline on the first side.

Gridded stripbox · 130° from the camera direction · 1.3 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Light 2 · rim

Your blue candidate

Blue outline on the opposite side; preserve a dark center.

Gridded stripbox · -130° from the camera direction · 1.3 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Make the test frames

  1. Test each edge alone with the face turned to its final pose.
  2. Control overlap with position and flags. More overlap is not automatically an error.
  3. Combine and watch for an ear or shiny fabric channel clipping before the whole image looks bright.

Keep camera WB fixed for comparisons. Begin with your neutral key reference, then adjust deliberately.

Meter with the actual gel fitted. Keep filtration loss separate from your chosen creative level. Unknown source output and camera settings remain unknown; no universal flash fraction is implied.

When the first frame differs

  • A dark central face is expected with two rear rims and no key.
  • A bright central overlap changes the design. Narrow the beams or turn the subject before judging color purity.
Troubleshoot my version

Adapt the kit

  • One light: retain a single colored edge and let the opposite side fall dark.
  • Three lights: add a neutral key for readable skin and test whether it dilutes the edges.

Evidence & publication record

Editorial status: published. Evidence status: illustrative.

No photographer is claimed to have tested this setup. No finished photograph, actual meter readings or original flash settings have been supplied. Replacing a diagram with an illustration does not establish testing evidence.

Sources, evidence & screen previews

These tools propose experiments. Screen colors are appearance targets, not recovered spectra, gel identities or guaranteed camera results. Numeric measurement inputs are supplied by you; publication and studio testing are separate checks.
