The lighting plan

Light 1 · background

Your magenta candidate

Color the backdrop behind an unlit subject.

Reflector · 175° from the camera direction · 1.2 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Make the test frames

  1. With flash off, check whether ambient is already revealing the face.
  2. Aim the gelled flash at the backdrop; hide the unit and stand behind the subject if the frame permits.
  3. Refine subject-to-background separation and the visible outline. Keep the stand stable and paths clear.

Keep camera WB fixed for comparisons. Begin with your neutral key reference, then adjust deliberately.

Meter with the actual gel fitted. Keep filtration loss separate from your chosen creative level. Unknown source output and camera settings remain unknown; no universal flash fraction is implied.

When the first frame differs

  • If the face is too visible, reduce unwanted ambient or bounce rather than automatically reducing background light.
  • Light at the lens can veil the silhouette. Change aim and flag safely.
Troubleshoot my version

Adapt the kit

  • Two lights: add a narrow contrasting rim, preserving the dark face.
  • Three lights: add a controlled key to leave the silhouette style; this is a different contribution.

Evidence & publication record

No photographer is claimed to have tested this setup. No finished photograph, actual meter readings or original flash settings have been supplied. Replacing a diagram with an illustration does not establish testing evidence.

Sources, evidence & screen previews

These tools propose experiments. Screen colors are appearance targets, not recovered spectra, gel identities or guaranteed camera results. Numeric measurement inputs are supplied by you; publication and studio testing are separate checks.
