The lighting plan

Light 1 · key

None / neutral

Keep the face readable and mostly neutral.

Gridded softbox · -30° from the camera direction · 1.5 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Light 2 · rim

Your amber candidate

Trace the hair and shoulder; check the front of the face.

Gridded stripbox · 135° from the camera direction · 1.5 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Light 3 · background

Your blue candidate

Cool the surrounding background.

Reflector with grid · -145° from the camera direction · 1 m from its target · height 2 m.

Illustrative starting placement; adjust to the subject, beam and space.

Make the test frames

  1. Establish the neutral face exposure.
  2. Turn only the rim on; move it behind the subject until its front-face spill is appropriate. Flag the source-to-lens path.
  3. Add the cool background and inspect each RGB channel in the combined test.

Keep camera WB fixed for comparisons. Begin with your neutral key reference, then adjust deliberately.

Meter with the actual gel fitted. Keep filtration loss separate from your chosen creative level. Unknown source output and camera settings remain unknown; no universal flash fraction is implied.

When the first frame differs

  • Bright ears can be transmission, not just excess exposure. Change the angle before sacrificing the whole rim.
  • Lens haze needs a flag or repositioning. Reducing power may leave the flare geometry unchanged.
Troubleshoot my version

Adapt the kit

  • Two lights: keep neutral key and amber rim; let the unlit background stay dark.
  • One light: keep the amber edge for a silhouette. A neutral lit face needs another contribution.

Evidence & publication record

Editorial status: published. Evidence status: illustrative.

Prepared by Learn Studio Lighting editorial · Published 2026-10-22 · Updated 2026-10-22.

No photographer is claimed to have tested this setup. No finished photograph, actual meter readings or original flash settings have been supplied. Replacing a diagram with an illustration does not establish testing evidence.

Sources, evidence & screen previews

These tools propose experiments. Screen colors are appearance targets, not recovered spectra, gel identities or guaranteed camera results. Numeric measurement inputs are supplied by you; publication and studio testing are separate checks.
